Nonfiction vs. Fiction

Last week our class began learning about the differences of nonfiction and fiction texts. After we thought and charted the things we already know about nonfiction texts, the class used Scholastic Book Club Flyers to cut out fiction and nonfiction books. Using a t-chart, they sorted the books into the column they belonged under. This was an activity that My friend Becky did with her class, so the credit for creativity goes to her! The whole class was really into this project and the discussions the kids were having about why the book belonged under the nonfiction column or fiction column were amazing coming from first graders! Here are their finished products...

At home you and your child can sort their books into nonfiction and fiction!

Thank You Perce Orthodontics!

Our school gave us the opportunity to apply for a grant for $100, we just needed to tell what we would spend it on and how it would benefit our students. I chose to apply for Storia e-books for my class because we are a 1:1 first grade i-pad class. Storia is a free app that is used to read Scholastic e-books on our i-pads. When a teacher has a Storia e-book account, they can have up to 40 devices connected to their e-book library! The best part is; these books can be accessed from anywhere as long as they have their i-pad. AWESOME, huh!? Well..... We won!
Perce Orthodontics purchased $100 of Scholastic e-books for our class and we couldn't be happier! The kids are LOVING these e-books and so am I!

Into September

I can't believe that it's September and I am just now blogging about my first grade kiddos! Today we played a pretty cool short "a" game that I wanted to share. I saw something similar on Teachers Pay Teachers, so I re-created it to match my class' needs.

The directions at the top explain it all. Roll. Read & Write: Short a words. They roll a dice, the number they roll is the short a word they need to write. They took turns in groups of three and enjoyed playing! I love that they can have so much fun while practicing their phonics, listening, spelling, and cooperation skills. The following photos are my kiddos playing the game today.

Hopefully I will get around to posting before October! ;)
