Today ROCKed!

Today the kids totally ROCKed out! We covered 3 of our science standards.
Benchmarks:
SC.2.E.6.1- Recognize that Earth is made up of rocks. Rocks come in many sizes and shapes.
SC.2.E.6.2- Describe how small pieces of rock and dead plant and animal parts can be the basis of soil and explain the process by which soil is formed.
SC.2.E.6.3- Classify soil types based on color, texture (size of particles), the ability to retain water, and the ability to support the growth of plants.

First, we wrote all the things we already know about rocks, Our Schema.

Then We learned all about these AMAZING Rocks and Minerals from Ms. Jen our Geologist! Sure wish I has taken a picture of her teaching!

We did a sick or float activity, and the first 2 pumice stones sunk!!!! There went that lesson, but the 3rd one floated, so they at least got to see that not all rocks will sink. :)

Then we tested pebbles, sand, clay, and soil to see which one we think would be best for planting and which one would retain the most water! We want to continue this by planting some seeds in each one and see which one grows the plant the best.

We ended the day with dirt cups, so that we can see all the important things that make up soil.

This was our winner of the estimation jar. Our jar had 236 pebbles in it and her number was the closest at 200.

The week of Frogs

The official TP Club, (TP is toad pee) Starting Monday morning our school has been flooded with baby frogs, so today we still had quite a few, so today they caught as many as they could.

Here is the collection before they let them go.

We got our new student tablets, we have 3 in our classroom. We have been using Epic and IXL Math on them.

We put coffee filters in our leaf/alcohol jars and we have watched the color from the leaves move up the filter.

We also learned...

Congratulations to these two, their names were drawn on Friday and they will each have a mini Kirby sitting on their desk next week. Each Friday our school draws 10 names to get a Kirby for the week. They can earn Cardinal bucks throughout the week and then Friday morning we put all our bucks in the box.
