A Weather Vane

We have been so excited to visit the Sykes and Cooper Corn Maize and to prepare them for what they might see, we read books about farms all week and the kids really enjoyed The Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown.

We had great discussions about the vocabulary in this book particularly the weather vane. None of my students knew what a weather vane was...

After reading about a weather vane in The Big Red Barn, I found another book that was all about a weather vane, Bonnie Bess The Weather Vane Horse.

My class was really interested in seeing a weather vane, so I did some more research and found Steve Spangler's science website where they show you how to make your own weather vane. My dad also found a weather vane in his yard (don't ask). :)

We will continue to learn more about weather, how and why a weather vane was used and more about North, East, South, West. If you have heard your child saying "Never Eat Soggy Waffles, they are referring to how I taught them to remember these directional words.

I love when a group of students become interested in something because they first read about it in a book and questioned what it was. I love my group of question askers! ;)
